Most Rev. Dr. Daniel Acharuparambil, the President of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, the head of the Latin Hierarchy in Kerala and the Archbishop of Verapoly died on Monday morning, 26th October 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Lourdhes Hospital Ernakulam. He was 71 and suffering from Liver Cyrosis for a couple of years.

He was in office and performing all the pastoral duties, when he collapsed suddenly complaining abdominal pain.

 

Born at Pallippuram in Ernakulam District, Kerala in the year 1939, joined the Discalciated Carmelite Order  and belonged to the province of Manjummel.

He was ordained a priest in 1966.

Having a doctorate from the Banarese Univerity in Hiduism, he was appointed a teacher of Missiology and Indian Philosophy in the Urban University, Rome (Urbaniana). He also served the university as the Rector Magnificus for six years.

He was a much esteemed teacher and scholar of Hiduism and Indian spirituality.

 

In the year 1996 His Holiness John Paull II appointed him the archbishop of Verapoly in Kerala at the retirement of Archbishop Cornelius Elanjickal. Bishop Daniel served the archdiocese for the past thirteen years tirelessly and concentrated on the spiritual and educational upliftment of the community.

 

He had published three books on Indian spirituality : The Evolutionary thought of Aurobindo, Hindu Religion – Life and Vision, and Hindu Religion, a search for the Eternal Truth.

 

The final rites and the burial will be officiated by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, at  3.30 pm on Wednesday, 28th October 2009 at the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, Ernakulam.
